Memories might blur as decades pass, but the touch and feel of a cherished object can transport us to travels past. Explore the objects further and whole worlds unravel; distant tales of fabled civilisations, long lost empires and the impossible characters that defined them. Pictured here, a delicately patterned Izmir tile collected by Miguel Flores-Vianna calls to mind the fantastic colors of tile-clad mosques, while Nathalie Farman-Farma’s courtier hints at the cultured soirees, saffron infused tea and intrigue of the Persian court, and a beautifully ornate mother of pearl inlay table conjures ancient Damascene souks. Hold the pieces, imagine their previous owners, and suddenly the Silk Road come to life, stretching out before us. Its myriad cultures, artisans and waypoints tell the story of those who travelled it, inviting speculation and curiosity about the creators, merchants and dignitaries who passed along its route over centuries past.

“I will never forget the first time I visited the city. I knew nothing about Istanbul and the taxi deposited us in front of a two-storey wooden mansion, which, on entering, seemed frozen in time. The first morning I woke up hearing a strange and beautiful noise coming from the garden. It took me a second to realise that it was the day’s first call to prayer from a nearby mosque. I was hooked.”
Miguel Flores-Vianna has since returned to Istanbul many times. Click the link in bio to discover the very special insider’s guide he shares with Cabana. #WorldofCabana

“I like to imagine people from another era having their morning coffee in a room where the interiors are a rich mixture of furnishings and objets d’art from Europe, Turkey, and the East.” Istanbul’s rich colours and myriad patterns and textures bear testament to the historic city’s beguilingly diverse, rich cultural heritage. As Demet Müftüoğlu Eşcli says in #CabanaN13 , “Sometimes one needs to see how the past manifests itself in our time.”
