More space for more science aboard the @iss .🔬🦠🧪 NASA astronaut Mike Barratt recently installed ADSEP-4, a processing facility designed for various research aboard the space station. This fourth-generation system supports studies on cell growth, protein crystal formation, microorganism adaptation in microgravity, and particle behavior in fluids. With updated electronics and a more compact design, ADSEP-4 increases the station’s capacity for innovative science.

It’s giving … Moon. 🌑⁣ ⁣ Iceland’s stark geological landscape has served as a training ground for astronauts since Apollo. Now, the Artemis II crew have joined that long history. ⁣ ⁣ NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency (CSA) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, along with their backups, NASA astronaut Andre Douglas and CSA astronaut Jenni Gibbons, joined geology experts for field training on the Nordic island this summer. ⁣ ⁣ They learned fundamentals of geology, tested tools, practiced expeditionary skills, and provided invaluable feedback to instructors who are building out training for future Artemis crews. While the Artemis II astronauts won’t be landing on the lunar surface, what they learned will allow them to make informed observations of the Moon from their unique vantage point as they fly by our planetary neighbor. The insights they share with scientists on the ground could provide a foundation for surface mission plans for Artemis III and beyond as we seek answers to the origins of our solar system. ⁣ ⁣ Read more about their experience at the link in the bio. ⁣ ⁣ Credit: @NASA ⁣ ⁣ #NASA #Artemis #Apollo #Moon #Geology #Astronauts #Science #space #solarsystem #ItsGiving #Iceland #Geologists

NASA astronaut Don Pettit is on his way to the space station for his fourth mission, and we are looking forward to nearly six months of his inventive astrophotography! During his most recent mission in 2012, Pettit improvised an on-orbit ‘barn door tracker,’ a device that helps take long-exposure photos of the night sky by matching Earth’s rotation. Pettit has since improved the device and is bringing it with him for this mission. What do you think he will come up with next? 🌌 jsc2012e039799_alt: Star trail composite created with iss030e153653 through iss030e153701 🌌 jsc2012e039802_alt: Star trail composite created with iss030e173375 through iss030e173424 🌌 jsc2012e051505_alt: Star trail composite using iss030e158927 through iss030e158944 🌌 jsc2012e065057: Star trail created with iss031e066034 through iss031e066130 📸 NASA/Don Pettit

@NASAAstronauts Don Pettit is making his fourth journey to the International Space Station (@iss ) as a veteran of three previous spaceflights with a log of more than 370 days in space and 13 space walk hours. He will spend 6 months living and working in the orbiting laboratory.  @Astro_Pettit with his cosmonaut crewmembers, Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner, launched on the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-26 spacecraft from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 12:23 p.m. ET.  Pettit and his cosmonaut crewmembers are scheduled to dock at the station a few hours later today at 3:33 p.m. ET  #NASA #DonPettit #LauchDay #Astronaut #InternationalSpaceStation #Mission #RocketLaunch

“I’m like a cowboy that wants to be on a horse out in the range. I’m an astronaut that needs to be sitting on a rocket and flying in space.” - NASA Astronaut Don Pettit, who is scheduled to return to space this week after more than 12 years away. 🚀

Don will launch aboard a Soyuz rocket from Kazakhstan with cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner. They will spend six months aboard the International Space Station.

Launch is scheduled for 12:23 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, Sept. 11. Watch live at plus.nasa.gov.

Get to know Don as he prepares for his fourth mission to space:

As Earth turns, so do we. 🌍 Take a moment to reflect on life as it is at this moment while enjoying this time-lapse from the International Space Station. The @iss ’s solar arrays reflect auroras and city lights as they align themselves with the Milky Way above for the approaching sunrise. Because the Moon was not in view during the night portions of the crew’s orbits, the main belt of the Milky Way was bright enough for astronaut Matthew Dominick to photograph—with the aurora glowing just before sunrise. @NASAAstronauts aboard the International Space Station orbit Earth about once every 90 minutes, which means they have many opportunities to spot sunrises like this from space. @nasaastronauts @jonnykimusa will serve as a flight engineer and member of the upcoming Expedition 72/73 crew during his first mission to the International Space Station (@iss ). Kim will launch on the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft in March 2025, accompanied by Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Ryzhikov and Alexey Zubritsky. The trio will spend approximately eight months at the space station. @nasa selected Kim as an astronaut in 2017. After completing the initial astronaut candidate training, Kim supported mission and crew operations in various roles including the Expedition 65 lead operations officer, T-38 operations liaison, and space station capcom chief engineer. #NASA #Astronauts #SpaceStation #Expedition72 #Expedition73 #SpaceExploration Photo Credit: NASA
